THE COLD WAR
& VIETNAM

Apocalypse Now (DVD)
Apocalypse Now (VHS widescreen)
Apocalypse Now (VHS), by Francis Ford Coppola, 1979. With Martin Sheen & Marlin Brando.

Battle of Algiers (VHS)

Bridges at Toko-Ri (VHS), by Mark Robson, 1955.

Full Metal Jacket (VHS) A brutal story of war and training for war, both of which take a terrible toll on the group of men portrayed.

Green Berets (DVD), with John Wayne. A Vietnam era movie widely recognized as a Hollywood propaganda piece, it nevertheless remains much watched. (Historical Setting, Fictional Story)

Go Tell the Spartans (VHS), by Ted Post, 1978. With Burt Lancaster.

Men in War (DVD), by Anthony Mann, 1957.

Platoon (DVD), with Charlie Sheen. One of the first movies to attempt a realistic depiction of combat in Southeast Asia. Its only drawback is the somewhat sappy narration by the main character, which definitely detracts from the movie.

Pork Chop Hill (DVD), by Lewis Milestone, 1959. With Gregory Peck.

Red Dawn (DVD), with Patrick Swayze and Charlie Sheen. Cheesy early 80s story about a group of teenagers resisting a hypothetical communist invasion of the central United States.

Dr. Strangelove (DVD)
Dr. Strangelove (VHS), with Peter Sellers. The classic 60s black comedy about the end of the world. It may be impossible to heap enough praise on this movie, mostly because of the excellent screenplay and acting. Ignore the occasionally primitive special effects, and watch some of the best actors of their time put in some of the best performances of their collective lives. Personal favorite line: "Gentlemen, you can't fight in here, this is the war room!"

317th Platoon (VHS), by Pierre Schoendoerffer, 1965.
