Day
of Infamy, by Walter Lord An extensive series of back-to-back
eyewitness accounts. From sailors on board the Arizona to civilians wandering
around Honolulu, you "visit" all of them as they try to make sense of their new
lives. Keep in mind that a number of eyewitness accounts are not surprisingly
inaccurate, but those wanting to more seriously explore such possibilities have
other more detailed volumes to select from (see below). This one is great for
down-to-earth reading.

At
Dawn We Slept: The Untold Story of Pearl Harbor, by Gordon
Prange The world's leading (and only) expert on the Pearl Harbor attack,
Gordon Prange interviewed virtually every available participant of the attack.
From Husband Kimmel to Mitsuo Fuchida, these post-war survivors gladly gave
their time and in many cases, friendship to Mr. Prange, who also exhaustively
studied the volumes of reports and documents relating to post-attack inquiries.
At Dawn We Slept was condensed into book format from the 10 volumes of material
collected over 35 years. Nobody before or since enjoyed the same position of
trust and familiarity with so many of the people directly involved in the
attack, and few people have presented such a generally accurate presentation of
this important event.

Tarawa:
The Story of a Battle, by Robert Sherrod. Sherrod's now famous account of
the Tarawa landings, is seen from the view of a war journalist who waded on
shore immediately on the heels of the first three assault waves. His eyewitness
account of all but the very first men ashore remains one of the most quoted
sources for this terrible battle. Bloody Shambles : The Defence of Sumatra to the Fall of
Burma, by Christopher Shores Bloody Shambles : The Drift to War to the Fall of Singapore,
