The Pity of War, by Niall Ferguson. A controversial book which raises many interesting questions, it remains to be seen how many of the answers it offers are correct.

The World War One Source Book, by Philip J. Haythornthwaite. This source book is an excellent overview of the weapons, armies and men who fought World War One. It is simply crammed full of valuable organizational data, weapon performance information and opens with a short, to-the-point summary of the course of the war. A must buy for anymore who isn't already an expert... and even the experts will probably like the handy glossary of terms!

The First World War, by John Keegan.

World War I : A Short History, by Michael J. Lyons. Not unlike the World War One sourcebook, A Short History takes a generous overview of the entire war. In this case however, the entire book is an extended 300+ page general summary of the course of the entire conflict, with maps and some illustrations. Both military and political dimensions are thoroughly covered, as are many closely related such as the Russian Revolution. Another excellent general reference for this turning point in world history.

1915 : The Death of Innocence, by Lyn MacDonald

To the Last Man : Spring 1918, by Lyn MacDonald

The Doughboys : America and the 1st World War, by Gary Mead

Weapons of the Trench War 1914-1918, by Anthony Saunders.
An excellent overview of weapons developed in the trenches of the western front, mostly from a British perspective and with an emphasis on grenades. Includes numerous rare and interesting photos and diagrams as well as interesting sections about such little-known weapons as the Livens Drum, a kind of early napalm cannister (before napalm was introduced of course). Now available in paperback and a worthwhile purchase for anyone really interested in the details of World War One.

Fire in Afghanistan, 1914-1929 : Faith, Hope and the British Empire, by Rhea Talley Stewart

The Guns of August, by Barbara Tuchman. The Pulitzer Prize winning history of the first month of World War One. Mandatory reading for anyone wanting to understand the beginnings of the war to end wars.

Silent Night : The Story of the World War I Christmas Truce, by Stanley Weintraub. While doing other WWI research I have often seen short references to this fascinating event, but this is the first book I've seen which addresses the truce itself and delves into the details and personal account "en masse."

Gudmundsson's book thoroughly tracks the progress of the various military factions which led to the development of assault tactics.
