A
Hundred Miles of Bad Road :An Armored Cavalryman in Vietnam, 1967-68
(paperback), by Dwight W. Birdwell & Keith William Nolan. Outstanding
story of a tanks crew's tour of Vietnam. Rather than intrusively pound home a
contrived message, the authors leave the inevitable conclusions to the reader.
A Rumor of War, by Philip Caputo. A classic memoir of the
Vietnam War, this combat-eye-view of the war is now required reading at many
schools and universities across the United States, and for good reason. It is a
brutal and depressing story of death and abuse. Not for the weak of heart.

or object involved in the Vietnam War.
We Were Soldiers Once...and Young : Ia Drang : The Battle That
Changed the War in Vietnam, by Lt.Gen. Hal Moore and Joseph Galloway. The
basis for the movie We Were Soldiers, General Moore's factually accurate
book gives a vivid and unselfish view of the war on the ground at this now
famous series of battles at landing zones X-Ray and Albany. In the tradition of
Marshal Suchet, the general gives ample and generous credit to his many
subordinates throughout the length of the text. Ripcord,
by Keith William Nolan. Story of the battle around Firebase Ripcord by the
101st Airborne during the summer of 1970.
The Battle for Hue : Tet 1968 by Keith William Nolan.
Night
of the Silver Stars : The Battle of Lang Vei, by William R. Phillips.
Stealth
Patrol: The Making of a Vietnam Ranger, 1968-70, by Bill Shanahan and
John P. Brackin. Bill Shanahan was a member of the elite LRP (Long Range
Patrol) teams which daily prowled the central highlands of Vietnam,
meticulously observing the Viet Cong and North Vietnamese Army units who moved
constantly through that area. The author's greatest asset is his ability to cut
straight to the core of events especially the simple and pervasive need
to keep quiet and to give credit to the many people who served
for much longer and with greater skill. Throughout history commanders in chief
have always said "If we only had a few more like these..." Well, the LRP teams
were some of "these" few.
