From Manassas to Appomattox, by James Longstreet. Confederate General James Longstreet's turn-of-the-century memoirs were published many years into a divisive debate surrounding his performance at Gettysburg. While the General was innocent of the charges, the many years of rancorous arguing had taken its toll and the memoirs themselves are very defensive in tone.

Lee's Tarnished Lieutenant : James Longstreet and His Place in Southern History, by William Garrett Piston. Reconstructing the military career of one of the Confederacy's best corps commanders, this book reveals how Longstreet became, in the years after Lee's death, the scapegoat for the South's defeat.

Mr. Simpson's first installment of a two part series is a meticulously researched and revealing work, which helps to clear away a great deal of inaccurate hearsay and rumor which, amazingly, has circulated for over a century. Readers can also read General Grant's account of the war in his own words in his on-line memoirs here at WTJ.
