| Indirect fire may be conducted by any
bases capable of indirect fire missions (See equipment lists). Each
participating base wishing to conduct indirect fire is allowed to place one
impact zone marker during one of the two artillery phase each turn. See game
markers and equipment lists to establish the impact zone markers
available to respective base types. Nationalities whose artillery
command is rated as Slow may only conduct standard indirect fire on
the first artillery fire phase. The only exception to this is overwatch,
(see below). Nationalities whose artillery command is rated as Fast may
fire on either one of, but not both, artillery phases. Each base may only
conduct one fire mission per turn, and may not conduct direct fire on the same
turn they conduct an indirect fire mission. « 3.1 Artillery Effects Indirect artillery fire is indicated on the playing board using the round impact zone markers described in the game markers section. They are placed during the Artillery Placement phases and once laid down must remain in place until "used" during the Artillery Fire Effects phase. Impact zone markers will "attack" all combat bases which they are touching as of the start of the Artillery Fire Effects phase. Bases which move out from under impact zone markers placed during the first placement phase are not affected by those markers, hence the relative inefficiency of artillery placed during the first placement phase. Bases which move into or through impact zone markers during their movement phase must immediately roll for damage/casualties. Smoke- Impact zone markers may be exchanged for non-lethal smoke screen markers. Standard direct fire may not be conducted through smoke screens, which are assumed to be two "levels" high. Bases with ST (See through) capabilities are not restricted by this and may fire through smoke (Also see optional rules: ____ special smoke). « 3.2 Special Rules Overwatch- During the command phase, bases capable of indrect fire may be placed on counterbattery duty called overwatch. While on overwatch, bases may not conduct any indirect fire unless an enemy base conducts indirect fire onto a target which lies within the overwatching base's radar range. In this event, the overwatching unit may immediately conduct indirect fire against the firing enemy battery by placing an appropriate impact zone marker anywhere within 5cm of the enemy base or bases. When fire resolution is carried out during the artillery resolution phase, the resulting counter-battery fire is calculated as if the targeted battery were directly observed (i.e. - there is no reduction for target position not directly observed). If no indirect fire impacts within an overwatching base's radar range, the base may not fire indirectly that turn. Overwatching units may not move during the movement phase, but they may still fire directly during the direct fire phases. Note that not all bases are capable of conducting overwatch missions. Only those with a range value indicated in the radar column of the equipment lists may do so. This radar value indicates that the parent units which commonly use this equipment are equipped with artillery tracking radar. |
