LAND WAR IN THE AGE OF MACHINES: 1914-1918

Historical Order of Battle: DE

German 1st Infantry Division - Began war as part of 1st Army Corps in Russia (Konigsberg), fought at the battle of Tannenberg. To France in March, 1916. Put in line near Vaux at Verdun April 20, from this time suffering enormous losses. In July the Division was returned to the Eastern front, leaving the 41st Regiment behind at Verdun. Served with Carpathian Corps in Dorna-Vatra region and against retreating Russians until December 1917. Returned to France, where it relieved the 13th Reserve Division in Lorraine on the 27th. Relieved by 11th Bavarian Division in mid-February and sent to Conflans for training as an assault division. Then put in line at Bray, North of Somme, where it again suffered enormous casualties which brought individual company strengths down to 40 men! After a three week rest, the division was again returned to the Somme, where it immediately suffered more casualties, after which it was placed in reserve, eventually ending up in the Champagne region by early July. After some fighting near St.Hilaire, the division was committed to the line at Bois de Vrigny in order to aid the German troops in the Rhiems pocket. After resting near Laon, relieved 27th division near Laffauax where it was surprised by a French attack, losing heavily (over 2,300 lost as prisoners). Last identified near Liart at the time of armistice.

This Division's recruiting area in E.Prussia was too sparse to maintain full strength, and was maintained with troops from other districts, resulting in a less distinctive unit than other German Divisions. By the end of 1918, it was rated as a third class division.
